About Thai

Thai, or Central Thai, is a Tai language of the Kra–Dai language family spoken by Central Thai people and vast majority of Thai Chinese. It is the sole official language of Thailand. Thai is the most spoken of over 60 languages of Thailand by both number of native and overall speakers.

Thai Test for Non-Native (CU-TFL)

What is CU-TFL?

The Chulalongkorn University Proficiency Test of Thai as a Foreign Language (CU-TFL) is designed by The Sirindhorn Thai Language Institute, Chulalongkorn University, to evaluate Thai language proficiency in speaking, reading, listening and writing skills. CU-TFL test applicants may choose to undertake either integrated skills or skills-specific assessment tests.

CU-TFL is a standardized proficiency test for speakers of Thai as a foreign language designed by the Sirindhorn Thai Language Institute, Chulalongkorn University. CU-TFL test applicants may use the test results to fulfill admission requirements as outlined by Thai education institutions or to evaluate their Thai language efficiency skills for personal improvement.

Who should take the CU-TFL test?

Non-native Thai speakers who would like to know the level of their Thai language proficiency for language skills improvement.

What is the Thai Language Proficiency Test

The Thai Language Proficiency Test is hosted by Technology Promotion Association (Thailand-Japan). The test’s objective is to evaluate students’ abilities in Thai. The test will not result in “pass” or “fail”, but will indicate the test taker’s level (beginner, elementary, intermediate, advanced, or proficient).

Level Definitions

1.Beginner

Those who are at the beginner level are able to read and write Thai, and are able to understand basic vocabulary and grammar. They can also create short sentences about their daily life situations.

2.Elementary

Those who are at the elementary level are able to read and write Thai fluently, and understand daily life vocabulary and grammar well. They also have good listening comprehension and are able to communicate in daily life situations.

3.Intermediate

Those who are at the intermediate level are able to understand complicated sentences, and are able to communicate properly. They can understand Thai articles about general topics in newspapers or magazines, and also are able to use of Thai at the workplace.

4.Advanced

Those who are at the advanced level are able to understand more complicated sentences than intermediate level sentences. They can read, listen, and understand content about economics, politics, and social issues in newspapers, magazines, T.V., or radio channels. They can also use Thai confidently at the workplace and are able to live in Thailand without language problems.

5.Proficient

Those who are at the proficient level are able to use Thai as proficiently as Thai people in all skill areas.
